My thoughts:

 

I first heard about Mel Robbins via an interview she conducted with Tim Bilyeu on his youtube channel. Due to her no-nonsense style, I immediately bought her book The 5 Second Rule and began to read it. While I love the concept of The 5 Second Rule, and its practicality, the book lacks much of the depth I was hoping for. It is littered with anecdotes and shares a lot of social media commentary from her fans, but besides repeating the concept of her rule, it brings nothing new.

 

Now don’t get me wrong, I think the 5 Second Rule is genius – because it is practical, it is easily adaptable to any situation, and it is actually effective. Yet, it is not worth dedicating an entire thick book worth, no matter how useful the technique is. Also, there is nothing new added here – nothing one can not find easily via her many talks on YouTube, in a much more condensed form. I kept on reading, hoping to find another nugget of her brilliance in there somewhere, but Mel left us with only that rule.

 

While I highly recommend the use of this concept, you – as a reader – are faced with two choices: If you are someone who learns from reading a book and never heard of the 5 Second Rule, then, by all means, buy the book. If you, however, know the basic concept that makes up this rule, then continue to watch her youtube videos, and don’t waste your money. You already know all there is in the book anyway.
