Book Review: Darkest Before Dawn by Maya Banks

Maya Banks, books, book review
Maya Banks, books, book reviewI am going to start by saying that I am a fan of the KGI series. Maya Banks is one of my favorite authors, so I was excited to finally have time to read another one of her books. But unlike the others before, this one left me bewildered, and somewhat shocked, questioning what I just read.
I usually do not write spoilers in my reviews, but I will make an exception because I want to convey why I disliked Darkest Before Dawn as much as I did.
First, we have a strong-willed woman who fights to stay alive, in the middle of the Middle East, while being hunted by the terrorists she escaped from. What she does not know is that there are Americans who are also hunting her, but not to take her back home, but rather to hand her over to a crime boss, and use her as a tool to get revenge, while sacrificing her life to do so.
So far that is bad enough, but this supposed strong willed woman surrenders at some point that she is to be brought to slaughter, and I am supposed to believe that she falls for the guy that hands her over? Not only that, after an attempted rape by one of the bad guys, she falls around her American “friend’s” neck, and asks him to sleep with her, because she does not want to die a virgin. And of course, he complies. Oh, and gets her pregnant of course.
What the hell? I am supposed to fall for that? I know that romance novels are not based on reality, but they usually do not go this far off the rail, as this book does. And, I really wanted to like the book. I was completely and totally disappointed.
The only reason why I did not give it 1 star, is because I actually finished the book.
If you are looking for a steamy romance read my review on Her Hopes And Dreams by Terri Osburn instead.
